The Theory of Constraints’ “Five Focusing Steps” in action « Thinking for a Change

Date: October 26, 2016  Posted in: Commentary  Comments: 0

Improving ourselves and processes takes time. To start you need to review what processes need to be improved or to think to yourself what is the goal? Once that is reviewed you want to take a look at these five steps. The steps include where is the bottleneck, exploit the bottleneck, subordinate everything else to the bottleneck, elevate the bottleneck and repeat!

Key Takeaways:

  • Five key steps in this article will help businesses improve their processes.
  • Find bottlenecks in the work process and focus improvements on that area.
  • By continuing to focus the group on potential and actual bottlenecks as they arise, the process will continue to improve.

“When we’ve fully exploited the bottleneck, we must subordinate every other decision to our decision to exploit the bottleneck. All the resources that aren’t bottlenecks have, by definition, some slack. Use that slack to support the bottleneck.”
